Policy plan for the hotel&catering industry in Beringen

CityD prepared a policy plan for the city of Beringen in 2023.

Taking into account changing circumstances and environmental variables, we established a balanced policy for all hotel and catering entrepreneurs and their guests. Not only in the well-equipped core of Beringen-centre, but also in the other surrounding areas and at special locations, the hotel and catering industry plays an important social role and forms the cement for dynamic cores. The hotel&catering industry is an important employer and should certainly not be underestimated. In addition, the presence of the hotel and catering industry contributes to the liveability and atmosphere of city centres and surrounding areas, which also benefits other sectors such as trade, housing, services, etc. The hotel and catering industry is best diversified in the general interest of the liveability of residents and visitors, but is also geared to specific target groups.

CityD's approach follows the hourglass model. In the broad sense, we examine the qualities and focal points of the hotel&catering industry in Beringen, through our own location exploration, desk research, interviews, confrontations and benchmarking. These insights allow us to concisely compile a number of conclusions and starting points and to underpin the positioning and level of ambition. Afterwards, we will develop actions and measures again in a broader sense, together with the city, catering managers and other stakeholders.

In a second phase, analyses of the hotel&catering industry in Beringen were made on the basis of various available data. Examples include a benchmark against surrounding municipalities, a competition and socio-demographic analysis (taking into account visitor flows), experience research among residents and visitors,.... In addition to the above, environmental research was also carried out (parking, accessibility, schools, services, etc.).

Trends, developments and residents' needs create a certain inner-city dynamic based on supply and demand. If the customer changes, the demand and thus the supply changes. A wonderful world full of innovation, flexibility, creativity and entrepreneurship. We listed the main global, national or specific (local) trends relevant to the hotel&catering sector and, by extension, tourism and leisure; this entirely focused on and tailored to Beringen.

After the analysis phase, the ambitions, market space definition and objectives were mapped out. This included looking at the structure of this sector, the surroundings, the quality and profiling of the offer, licensing policy and marketing.

This project falls within our activities on Trade and hotel and catering industry. CityD guides governments and organisations to strengthen commercial centres with trade and hospitality.
